Transformers Review!!!!!!!!!!!

July 3, 2007

I just got back last night from watching Transformers. Wow. Honestly this movie was freaking amazing! Great visual effects, very sufficient story line, fantastic visuals, witty humor, hot girl, all star cast, and good music to boot. I should mention I went into this movie with really low expectations. I honestly thought it was just going to be another one of those summer movies with awesome special effects, epic scale, and little to nothing to remember it by when you’re done watching it. It’s even worse when they do it to your childhood favorite movies and pretty much ruins your memory of what it was and how awesome it was to you as a kid. Transformers is none of the above! SO! Instead of the usual listing of different aspects of the movie and me talking about them for a while, I’m just going to simply list my top 5 favorite things about this movie….and talk about them… Here we go!

5. The humor – this movie is actually freaking hilarious. I loled several times throughout and its never super insulting humor either (you know the kind that makes you laugh but kinda feel stupid? Not that there’s anything wrong with that….)

4. The direction – this kinda ties in with the plot a bit. Basically there are a TON of moving parts in this movie that make it a coherent movie with a tangible plot. Michael Bay does a great job of arranging the movie so that you get to know each character sufficiently enough to enjoy watching their segments and also understand what’s going on in the big picture. I’m not sure why I noticed this in particular but I think its definitely worth noting.

3. Huge cast! – John Voight, LeBeouf, Megan Fox, Tad Hamilton (hehe), Tyrese, Anthony Anderson, John Turturro, Hugo Weaving!! So many small medium and large stars! Good to see so many people in this awesome movie.

2. The phrase – I’m not going to spoil it but think of it this way. Remember this phrase from Snakes on a Plane? “Get these Motherfucking snakes off my mother fucking plane!” Remember how everyone was practically waiting to hear that the whole movie? It’s like that. You’ll know it when you hear it. As my good friend Brian puts it, “everyone gets to hear exactly what they want to hear!”

1. Uhh…. The TRANSFORMING? – The transformers all look awesome. They transform awesome and even though I was never a huge fan of the transformers series, I feel like the directors and writers kept the story true to the original. It’s nerdy and proud of it. Which I love. Check out my new desktop!!

Anyways, here’s a nice little clip from the movie. Go check it out!!

Also, here’s some music from the movie as well!

First Album Review! Rhapsody’s Front Page Tori Amos!

May 6, 2007

Hi everyone. I’ve been thinking to myself lately about the amount of exposure I get to outside influences of the artistic sort. Ever since I did PROJECT X (I’ll do a post on it later) I’ve been really inspired by a few of my fraternity brothers who are much more musical than I to let myself have more exposure to the “artsy fartsy” side of the world. What I mean by this is that I want to start listening to more different kinds of music and maybe reading more creative writing or looking at art or something. Ok, so I dont really know what I’m going to do precisely just yet but I figure it doesn’t get as easy as listening to an album of something I’ve never heard or heard of before.

Rhapsody does this cool thing on their home page where they have this fancy slide show thing that shows their newest and most featured artists and albums and tracks and stuff. I have NEVER actually used this but today, right now, I decided to click on what is most unappealing to me…Tori Amos… I have no idea who she is or what kind of music she makes so I figure, lets do it! Lets go!!@@!

Tori Amos – American Doll Posse

So in a nutshell (thanks to Rhapsody) this is some background info on Tori Amos.

“Tori Amos is a songwriter in the classic ’70s sense. Creating meaningful, emotional songs that incorporate acoustic guitar, piano, and strings into elaborate and evocative compositions, Amos’ fragile voice carries with it all the strength, emotion and sensuality her intelligent, poetic lyrics allow. Her complexity as an artist comes from her ability to display womanly vulnerability and subvert it with raw sexuality and intimidating, thick-skinned ire, embodying it all with startling honesty.”

I guess this is all true as the melodies are elaborate and evocative so to say, but the key question is, Do I like it? The answer is No, not really. Too bad too because I usually like what I listen to but in this case the music is just a little too “bouncy” and erratic for me to really enjoy listening to in my everyday life.

Example : Bouncing off Clouds by Tori Amos

Its not really good for relaxing, dancing, or working out to. There are a couple good slow tracks on this album…

Digital Ghost by Tori Amos …

Anyways, I listened to a bunch of the other songs and they pretty much all rubbed me the same way so I think I’ll pass on Miss Tori Amos next time I have the opportunity to listen to her music – Fat Slut by Tori Amos

Still though, I think this a good first new step in opening my eyes to more creativity and such in my life. Its nice that with Rhapsody I’m able to listen to all these things that are recommended by professionals and all for free and unlimited so I don’t have to download a bunch of software or buy a bunch of stuff for music I’m not wholly committed to. Thanks Rhapsody! ;)

I’ll leave you with one of the better songs on the album….Good feeling, sad feeling?

The VA Tech Shooting

May 3, 2007

I’m writing a bit of a delayed response to the shooting in VA Tech mainly because I prefer to avoid knee jerk responses to the things that happen around us.

Now before I go on I want to say that I’m sure that theres millions of other posts out there and I don’t presume to bring any new opinions to the scene or anything, nor do I think that is the point. Instead I just want to put into words my own opinions on this whole matter, whatever that may be.

Cho Seung Hui was a deeply troubled person and for reasons we’ll probably never understand he went on a rampage and killed 32 totally innocent victims. That much has happened and will never change. What has happened already is just that, already happened. The best we can do is be respectful to the victims, their memories and their families, offer as much support as humanely possible, and never ever forget what happened.

There will be plenty of people (ahem Jack Thompson, I’ll post about that later) who will want to knee jerk and blame it on something or make some drastic change or point our collective fingers at some innocent scapegoat.

It’s easy to do this but what I think we should do instead is take a look at ourselves as a nation, ourselves as family members, or even individuals and see if we are living or at least TRYING to live the healthy/fulfilling life of virtue. I don’t like to use the word virtue too much because for me at least it brings up this heavenly image of an angel or something which is really not really realistic. But words like, hope, charity, fortitude, patience are the kind of things I want to be living my life by. We are all in control of ourselves at least and no one in this world can stop you from living with your head held up high knowing that you follow these virtues. I feel like less people will be so filled with despair and hate that they would do such a horrendous act if they lived their lives with virtue.

Also I think this is an interesting quote:

Chris Rock: [On the US school shootings] Everybody is wanting to know what music were the kids listening to, or what movies were they watching. Who gives a fuck what they was watching! Whatever happened to crazy? What, you can’t be crazy no more? Should we eliminate crazy from the dictionary?

Well thats all I got.

Anime Review: Hajime no Ippo

April 14, 2007

SECONDS OUT!

Hajime no Ippo is without a doubt my second favorite anime next to Naruto. Its really close actually.

Makunouchi Ippo is a young timid boy who helps his mother with their family fishing business while getting picked on at school by the bullies. One particularly bad day of bullying where Ippo admits that he and his mom both smell like fish in order to avoid being even more severely beaten, he is rescued by the Japanese middleweight boxing champion Mamura Takamura. Takamura quickly dispatches the bullies not with punches but rather by showing off his superior strength, speed and stamina. Ippo watches in awe and follows Takamura to his boxing gym where he discovers his strength. It turns out Ippo’s extensive history of balancing on his family fishing boats and routine carrying of heavy boat equipment has honed his body to be a boxing machine. Hajime no Ippo follows Ippo’s boxing career as he goes from a timid rookie to a confident professional earning the respect and admiration of all those around him.

Much like Naruto, it is not simply the story and moving parts of this anime that makes it so good. Rather it is the way the storytellers show Ippo’s heart as he makes his first friend, has his first date, wins his first fight. I have never seen an anime where I almost cried so many times! The emotional presence in this show is amazing. The relationships created through the 76 episodes are equally amazing as the watcher also learns to love Ippo’s rivals, opponents, and his friends.

As I mentioned earlier, I started working out pretty consistently lately. I a little embarrassed to admit this this anime is more than just partially responsible for my change in attitude. Haha, I suppose this is the point of watching good materials as it drives the audience to make changes in their lives for the positive. In fact I even listen to the score while I run. It sounds silly but whatever gets me off my ass i suppose right??

Anyways, the show has a slightly older style of animation for some reason that is a little wierd to get used to at first but you definitely learn to love it.

I highly recommend it! Please watch and tell me what you think!

My Birthday Dinner with my family

August 25, 2006

Last night my mom took my, and my whole immediate family out to dinner at Teatro Zinzanni. It was an absolutely awesome time. I don’t want to spoil anything for anybody that may want to go but for a special occasion like an anniversary or a birthday or something for someone special this is definitely a great place to take them.

In a nutshell Teatro Zinzanni is a Magic show, an acrobatics show, a circus, and a musical show all in one fantastic three hour program. The food is amazing and plentiful served over the course of the entire show as well as being incorporated into some of the skits. The servers are all in on it too as in they go around and dance and stuff while they serve you the food. The performers, unlike at a usual circus, will go around to each indivudual table at some point during the night and do fun stuff as well. The acrobatics is amazing,  the magic show is performed by a guy named Voronin

voroninjpg.jpe

who looks like he was born to be a magician. His tricks are all very orignal and goofy. The entire show has a great sense of humor and you’ll find yourself laughing as many time as you are amazed by the talented cast.

The price I’ll admit is a bit steep but well worth it if you are in the right crowd of loved ones to share the evening with.

The MARVEL Civil War?

August 2, 2006

Last Tuesday, I decided not to go straight home after work and decided instead to stop by the local comic book store at the UW. Zanadu Comics. I kindly informed the store owner that I had been out of touch with comics for a long time and that I’d like to get back into a few storylines, if there were any good ones that weren’t too far developed yet. He noted my X-men Tshirt and proceeded to recommend me a new Universe wide story arc in the Marvel Universe known as, the Civil War.

For those of you who don’t know me, I love comics. For those of you who do know me, you probably know I love comics. Particularly the Marvel Universe and specifically the X-men and Spider Man. My favorite characters are Wolverine (typical), spidey, Colossus, Juggernaut and pretty much everyone else. Some of my favorite baddies are Dr. Doom and Magneto.

Anyways, getting back to business: The Civil War begins when congress (the fictional version of course) passes a law in response to a severe disaster that happened after a group of rookie heroes, hoping to boost the ratings of their own reality TV show. Several hundred people were killed in an enormous explosion, including over 200 children (elementary school nearby). Congress passes a law that says all superhumans (people with powers or abilities beyond the average person [includes punisher and daredevils]) must register as agents of the government. they would have to make known their secret identities, become subject to government provided training, but most importantly, operate as one united front of heroes. This obviously doesnt sount too bad, what what if you take into account some of the rivalries amongst the heroes? Some of the hatreds? Wolverine is a murderer. Several other heroes are former Villans. Hell even spider-man has never been the jewel of the public eye. What if their identities are public and their family members become targets of the “bad guys”?

Essentially, the Marvel Universe becomes split in two. Half for this new law, and half against it. Captain America goes AWOL and leads the resistance while Iron Man leads the effort of uniting the heroes. Not only are the heroes split, but so are the bad guys and so is each individual team. Former friends are now enemies, former enemies as you might guess are now working together for freedom or for security.
The story is very compelling and though I have only read the first 2 issues ( of 7) I am already hooked. This has the promise to be like House of M in the size of it’s scope and I’m very excited to read the rest. I know, even as an off an on comic book reader, that Marvel does do this sort of thing a little bit too often where they shake the whole universe to the core and whatnot, but you know, honestly I enjoy every moment of it. House of M was absolutely brilliant. The artwork and the writing is always top notch and I know I’ll be a Marvel fan for the rest of my life probably! Its absolutely crazy!!!!!!!!

Anyways, if you are a comic fan and like me have been out of touch with comics for a while, Civil War is definitely the perfect series for you to go ahead and “hop on” as it is still early in the series, it probably is collectible, the artwork and writing is stunning and compelling and the all our favorite heroes are featured!!!!! Have a great day.

My Last week : In Summary.

May 29, 2006

As school nears it's inevitable close every quarter I nearly always find myself feeling that same odd feeling of glee mixed with dread. One the one hand I am about to go on break from academia and that is glee. On the other hand I am about to take my finals which will in turn affect just how much fun I have on my break. Now you see my dilemma. To make things more difficult, it turns out my One YEAR ANNIVERSARY with my girl was on the 22nd. Not to say that this is a bad thing but that I have so much stuff to do for school around this time is really just sucky!

We did end up having a great time. We started the day off eating breakfast at Chace's Pancake house over in Bellevue, which was sweet. They really have a great assortment of really unique pancakes! After that we headed toward Bellevue Square where we played a cool game in which we both split off for 1 hour and searched for a gift under $20 to buy eachother. I got her a shirt from Hollister and also a cute Annivesary Disney Card from hallmark. She got me a build a bear (but it was really a Bunny [we named him Mr. Bunny]). We both liked eachother's gifts. We did a lot more anniversary type things the rest of the day (dinner @ Calcutta Grill, UW Driving Range) and all in all had a really fun day.

X-Men 3. Man. One helluva Movie. I'm gonna post a lengthy video review right after this post.

X-Men Party : So I'm pretty much this HUGE X-Men Geek. Biggest turnout we've had for any event around the fraternity this whole quarter was for the X-Men party I decided throw to commemorate the release of the 3rd movie. Got a bunch of highschoolers out to watch X1 and X2 on review at our Fraternity a la Projector. It was great fun.

I'm actually pretty sleepy right now but i'll leave you guys with this :
